แฝดสยามอิน-จัน เริ่มต้นการติดต่อระหว่างคนไทย-อเมริกัน ที่มีมามากกว่า 200 ปี ตั้งแต่ต้นรัตนโกสินทร์

Chang-Eng Siamese Twins, over 200 years of Thai-American people-to-people exchange

แฝดสยามอิน-จัน ถือเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งการติดต่อระหว่างคนไทย-อเมริกันที่มีมาอย่างยาวนาน ตั้งแต่สมัยร.3 ก่อนจะมีการสถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตระหว่างไทย-สหรัฐฯ เกิดขึ้น

ทั้งคู่ทำให้ชาวอเมริกันรู้จัก "สยาม" มากขึ้น เมื่อนายโรเบิร์ต ฮันเตอร์ ได้ทำสัญญาว่าจ้างแฝดสยามอิน-จันเดินทางไปทำธุรกิจโชว์ตัวที่ยุโรป-สหรัฐฯ ในปี พ.ศ. 2371

ปี พ.ศ. 2382 อิน-จัน ตั้งหลักปักฐานอยู่ที่แทรปฮิลล์ รัฐนอร์ธแคโรไลนา โดยซื้อที่ดิน 150 เอเคอร์ ทั้งคู่ประสบความสำเร็จในการทำธุรกิจ โดยเฉพาะการทำไร่ฝ้าย และได้รับสัญชาติอเมริกัน โดยใช้นามสกุล "บังเกอร์" ซึ่งเป็นนามสกุลของเพื่อนนักธุรกิจสมัยอยู่ที่นิวยอร์ก 

แฝดสยามแต่งงานกับพี่น้องตระกูลเยทส์ (Yates) โดยจันแต่งงานกับอาดีเลต เยทส์ มีทายาท 10 คน ส่วนอินแต่งงานกับซาราห์ แอน เยทส์ มีทายาท 11 คน ปัจจุบันมีทายาทตระกูลบังเกอร์กว่า 1,500 คน ซึ่งได้ร่วมกันจัดงานรำลึกถึงบรรพบุรุษในเดือนกรกฎาคมของทุกปีที่เมืองเมาท์แอรี รัฐนอร์ธแคโรไลนา 

ปี พ.ศ. 2561 คณะทายาทแฝดสยามได้เดินทางมาร่วมโครงการ "คืนถิ่นแฝดสยามอิน-จัน ที่ จ. สมุทรสงคราม ดินแดนบ้านเกิดของบรพพบุรุษ ซึ่งเป็นกิจกรรมหนึ่งในการฉลองครบรอบ 185 ปี ความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตไทย-สหรัฐฯ

Chang-Eng Siamese Twins have been considered as the significant symbol of the very first contact between Thai and American people since the reign of King Rama III, even before the establishment of Thai-U.S. diplomatic relations.

In 1829, the Twins had brought greater awareness of the Kingdom of Siam after they were contracted by Mr. Robert Hunter for the show business both in Europe and the United States.

In 1839, they settled down in Traphill, North Carolina. There, they purchased 150 acres of land and had successful plantation business, mainly in cotton. The Siamese Twins adopted the Bunker family name and were naturalized.

They married the Yates sisters, Chang to Miss Adelaide Yates and Eng to Miss Sarah Ann Yates. The Twins had 21 children, 10 to Chang and Mrs. Sarah Ann, and 11 to Eng and Mrs. Adelaide. At present, there are more than 1,500 descendants of Chang-Eng Bunker who hold the family reunion in July each year in Mount Airy, North Carolina.

In 2018, 14 descendants of the Twins participated in “The 1st official visit to Samut Songkhram Province”, their ancestor’s birthplace, organized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the activities to celebrate the 185th Anniversary of Thai-U.S. Diplomatic Relations.
